Setting up a badminton court at home or in a community space can transform your playing experience. Whether you want to practice daily or host friendly matches, having a dedicated court makes a big difference. But creating a proper badminton court involves more than just marking lines on the ground. You need to consider space, surface, lighting, and equipment carefully to meet the sport’s standards and ensure safety and comfort.

This guide walks you through the essential requirements for setting up your own badminton court, focusing on practical tips and clear examples to help you build a space that supports your game.

Space and Dimensions

A standard badminton court measures 13.4 meters (44 feet) long and 6.1 meters (20 feet) wide for doubles matches. For singles, the width reduces to 5.18 meters (17 feet). When planning your court, allow extra space around the court for movement and safety. Ideally, you want at least 2 meters (6.5 feet) of clearance on all sides.

Key points for space:

  • Court length: 13.4 meters (44 feet)

  • Court width for doubles: 6.1 meters (20 feet)

  • Clearance around court: minimum 2 meters (6.5 feet)

  • Ceiling height: at least 7.5 meters (25 feet) to allow high shots

If you are setting up outdoors, ensure the area is flat and free from obstacles like trees or poles. For indoor courts, check the ceiling height and lighting conditions.

Choosing the Right Badminton Court Flooring

The flooring plays a crucial role in player performance and injury prevention. The best badminton court flooring provides good grip, shock absorption, and durability. It also affects shuttlecock bounce and player movement.

Popular flooring options include:

  • Wooden flooring: Traditional choice, offers excellent shock absorption and smooth surface. Requires maintenance to avoid slipping.

  • PVC or vinyl mats: Common in many indoor courts, these mats provide consistent grip and cushioning. They are easier to install and maintain.

  • Synthetic sports flooring: Made from polyurethane or rubber, these surfaces combine durability with comfort.

Avoid concrete or asphalt surfaces as they increase injury risk and reduce play quality. If you must use a hard surface, consider adding mats designed for badminton.

Marking the Court and Setting Up the Net

Accurate court markings are essential for fair play. Use durable tape or paint designed for sports courts. The lines must be 40 mm (1.57 inches) wide and clearly visible.

Mark these lines:

  • Baselines at each end of the court

  • Sidelines for singles and doubles

  • Service lines for both singles and doubles

  • Center line dividing the service courts

The net should be 1.55 meters (5 feet 1 inch) high at the edges and 1.524 meters (5 feet) high at the center. Use a sturdy net post that can be anchored securely to the floor or ground.

Lighting and Ventilation

Good lighting helps players track the shuttlecock and reduces eye strain. For indoor courts, install bright, evenly distributed lights that minimize shadows and glare. LED lights with a color temperature of 4000 to 6500 Kelvin work well.

Outdoor courts should be positioned to avoid direct sunlight in players’ eyes during peak hours. If you plan to play at night, install floodlights with sufficient brightness.

Ventilation is important to keep the playing area comfortable. Indoor courts need good airflow to prevent humidity buildup and maintain fresh air.

Equipment and Accessories

Besides the court itself, you will need:

  • Net and posts: As described above, ensure the net is regulation height and tension.

  • Shuttlecocks: Choose feather or synthetic shuttlecocks depending on your preference and budget.

  • Rackets: Have a variety of rackets available for different skill levels.

  • Scoreboard: Optional but useful for organized play.

  • Seating and storage: Provide benches or chairs for players and storage for equipment.

Maintenance Tips for Your Badminton Court Flooring

Maintaining your badminton court flooring extends its lifespan and keeps it safe. Here are some tips:

  • Clean the floor regularly to remove dust and sweat.

  • Check for any damage or wear, especially on wooden floors.

  • Avoid using harsh chemicals that can degrade the surface.

  • Inspect the net and posts for stability.

  • Keep the playing area free from debris and moisture.

Setting up a badminton court requires attention to detail and commitment to quality. By focusing on the right space, proper badminton court flooring, accurate markings, and good lighting, you create an environment that supports your game and enjoyment. Take the time to plan carefully and invest in good materials. Your future matches will thank you.
