Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world — a fun, social, and easy-to-learn game that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Whether you’re looking for a new way to stay active or simply enjoy some friendly competition, pickleball is perfect for players of all ages and skill levels.
Before stepping onto the court, it’s important to understand the pickleball rules and layout to ensure you play safely and confidently.
Pickleball Court Dimensions

A standard pickleball court measures 20 feet wide by 44 feet long, the same size as a doubles badminton court. The court is divided into two equal halves by a 34-inch-high net at the center.
Each side of the court includes:
Right and Left Service Areas for serving.
A 7-foot Non-Volley Zone (commonly called the “kitchen”) near the net, where players cannot volley (hit the ball before it bounces).
These dimensions are suitable for both singles and doubles matches, ensuring fairness and consistency across all levels of play.
📜 Basic Pickleball Rules

Here are the basic pickleball rules every beginner should know:
Serve Underhand: The serve must be made underhand, hitting the ball below waist level, and served diagonally across the court.
Double Bounce Rule: After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before players are allowed to volley.
Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen): Players cannot volley the ball while standing in the kitchen or touching its line. You may only enter the kitchen to play a ball that has bounced there.
Scoring System: Only the serving team can score points. Games are usually played to 11 points, and a team must win by 2 points.
Faults: A fault occurs when the ball goes out of bounds, fails to clear the net, or is volleyed from inside the kitchen.
Why Pickleball Rules are Important
Pickleball rules keep the game fair, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. They ensure consistent play, prevent confusion or injury, and help beginners develop proper techniques from the start. Knowing the rules means you can focus on having fun and improving your game with confidence.
So grab your paddle, learn the basics, and enjoy the game!
